When I originally decided to take a break from teaching yoga, I thought that it would be for about a month. Fast forward 8 months later, I’ve stopped trying to plan. • • So much of this journey (selling our house and our stuff, moving away, buying and renovating a shack, relapsing with dysautonomia) maybe even ALL of this journey has been a lesson in surrender. Not giving up, but allowing. Because almost nothing ever goes “as planned.” And I am learning over and over again that I’m not in control (thank God) and “things take the time they take.” [Poem by Mary Oliver]
Dysautonomia is a blanket term to describe any malfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for all of the automatic stuff we take for granted such as pupillary dilation, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, perspiration, circadian rhythm/sleep, digestion...etc. In my case, dysautonomia was caused by head trauma, and there are a very wide variety of symptoms ranging from headaches, dizziness, loss of appetite, sensory overwhelm, insomnia, anxiety, tachycardia, fainting...etc. • It sucks. It’s scary. And it’s confusing and frustrating to retrain the nervous system. But what luck to make it my job to study my own body. I’m learning a ton and I hope to share my healing journey to help others who are dealing with this. [If you are, please reach out] 💙🙏

I and my body have been struggling the past few weeks, feeling very separate from one another. • I’ve been having trouble exiting meditation. I’ve had acute tailbone pain, extreme fatigue, eye strain, headaches, and dizziness. All 5 of my senses feel completely overwhelmed and overstimulated. Some days I wish I could just turn the whole world to black and white and shut off the volume. This is what dysautonomia feels like for me. • Now that I know it’s back, it’s like a lightswitch ‘a-ha, I-should’ve-known’ moment of relief. Now that I know it’s back, I have assurance that my feelings are valid and I have a much-needed excuse to stop. • I suppose it’s fitting that my physical therapy is always to do exactly what feels right: to sit quietly, to receive energy work and seek grounding activities, to rest, disconnect, slow down, close my eyes, or open my eyes to enjoy nature, one moment at a time.
